Shut down in mid-game? Or shut down as in cancelled? Either way gonna be a number of unhappy players and I'd be looking for an explanation also. . .

I'm confused. I still see it on the schedule in "registering" mode with 124 players in it so far. Could the pop-up have been an error?

I did a quick chat with the live support folks at Sportsbook. According to them, the tournament is still on.

It's not in the transcript but I prefaced the chat with a question to the effect that I was considering depositing hoping to get a ticket for the freeroll, but had been informed by another player that it had been cancelled and needed to know true or not to make a decision. What transpired after is as follows:

info: Hello, my name is Adrian Parks. I'll be assisting you today.
    Adrian Parks: Hello Stephen
Adrian Parks: Please give me a moment to look into this...
    Stephen: Hello, Adrian
    Stephen: Thank you
    Adrian Parks: You're very welcome.
Adrian Parks: Stephen, we still have it available it have not been cancelled.
Stephen: I see. I was told that a player that had already gotten a ticket and registered for the tournament received a pop-up message from the software client that the tournament had been cancelled.
Adrian Parks: You can see it available in you search for it on the poker software, Stephen.
Stephen: Yes, that's why I was confused when I was told that by my friend. That player is confused because of the pop-up they received.
Adrian Parks: Well, I can assure you that has not been cancelled and still active.
Stephen: That's good to know and I'll factor that into my final decision along with the other incentives for depositing.
    Stephen: Thanks for the information.
    Adrian Parks: You're very welcome.

It is always possible that given that I was indicating a possibility of depositing that they may have confirmed the tournament was still in effect even if they know it's not in hopes that I still would. So, take the above for what it's worth, a chat agents confirmation. I'm sure that if it is truly off the board someone somewhere will have concrete proof of some kind. . .
