Learn how to play five card draw

Five card draw was the poker players game of choice before Texas Holdem took the poker world by storm. The idea is to make the best five card hand after one draw or substitution of cards that the player wants to discard.

Being a draw game it is played with blinds, with the player immediately to the left of the dealer posting the small blind, and the player next left posting the big blind. Each hand starts with players being dealt five hole cards. The first player to act, sitting on the left of the big blind, has the option of folding, calling or raising. This applies to each player in turn in a clockwise direction around the table until all players have acted.

With this first round of betting complete, there then follows a draw. Each player selects from his hand the cards he wishes to discard (if any) by clicking on them. You can change your mind by clicking on the card a second time.

As in the first betting round, this continues in a clockwise direction around the table. When the action reaches you, simply press the button to confirm you wish to discard the cards you have selected.

After all players remaining in the hand have completed their draws there is another round of betting, starting with the first player to the left of the button who has not folded their hand.

After the second betting round has been completed, the winner of the pot is determined in two ways: the player left after everyone else folds; or the player with the best hand. If more than one player has the same valued winning hand the pot is split equally between them with the suit of each hand having no bearing.

I like playing this game now and again. It's a game where people are betting what they have got (as opposed to HE where anyone can be betting anything at any time) and good starting hands are essential. Raises usually mean what they suggest and it's one of those games where paying attention will reap rewards, as many players can be fairly predictable in their habits.

I always liked this game. As Sam says... paying attention to the other players will help you to know their habits. Draw players usually become creatures of habit and paying close attention to their habits can get you a certain degree of predictability about them. If any of you are thinking of taking this game up and want to look for a freeroll to play to get a better idea of the game...PokerStars has 2 to 3 of these NL 5 Card Draw freerolls a day. They are qualifiers for their 2k Weekly freerolls. I used to play these now and then and have qualified 3 times via the 5 Card Draw tourney. NL makes it a good game. Of course, they have 5 card draw ring tables as well which have play money tables to help you get the feel for the game before heading to the real money tables. Those tables have Limit, PL and NL available. I like to raise with AA or KK or better hands pre-draw and try to draw as cheaply as possible with lesser hands... mixing it up a bit according to the opponents habits. Good luck!

This is my grinding game.. I prefer this to nlh as the variance is alot lower and you can tell from playing cash tables who the regulars are and there "stylea' of play. This game has supplamented my br to an extent and stablized it somewhat. Good luck ! If you deciede to play draw at full tilt this is where you can find me. See ya there. :wave
