The whole "alternative currency" deal seems to be getting out of hand. But that's just my opinion. This article, discussing a new one, mentions about a half dozen others that I had never even heard of:

Probably it will continue to grow and get completely out of hand, due in part to the way governments have so screwed things up.

Have to use bankroll management principles as any particular alternative currency could collapse without warning.

If you get lucky and a particular currency becomes popular the value could balloon way up

    Lots of speculation going on.

edit: actually, thinking about it just now, it is not that much different in principle from the way paper money replaced gold and silver. Just a matter of people getting used to it. Keynes wrote about how he helped introduce paper money to India before WW1, in one of his books, which was interesting, getting people used to taking paper instead of silver and gold. Had to be freely convertible at first, to gain their trust. Then once they got used to it, countries went off the gold standard.
